THE ROLE Seaborg Technologies is hiring a highly capable molten salt chemist with extensive experience investigating chemical speciation, particularly in molten fluoride salts. You will be applying your expertise to plan and lead research programs focused on understanding the chemical behaviour of the CMSR’s molten fuel and moderator salts, in both static and dynamic environments, in order to support design activities and verify design requirements. Experience handling and purifying radioactive molten fluoride salts is strongly preferred. As an integral member of Seaborg, you will report to the Chief Chemist and work with a rapidly growing, highly skilled research team. You will also work closely with the Laboratory Manager to develop and establish facilities to handle radioactive molten fluoride salts. We are working closely with regulators, shipyards, and the nuclear industry to produce floating advanced nuclear power plants by 2025 and have grown to become the leading molten salt reactor company outside of North America with an international team of more than 30 employees from five continents. Key responsibilities Development, execution and continuous improvement of the research program to verify the CMSR fuel and moderator salt behaviour Prepare fuel and moderator salt specifications, and ensure purity of salts used for experimental campaigns meet these specifications Establish suitable facilities for molten salt chemistry experiments Ensure radioactivity handling meets safety and legal requirements Train and supervise colleagues and interns in the handling of molten salts and use of common analysis techniques such as electrochemistry and spectroscopy Document findings in a structured manner and report key findings to relevant stakeholders Key Tasks Design experiments to investigate the behaviour of chemical species in molten salts and determine key properties, e.g. solubility and diffusion coefficients Prepare and review project plans and deliverables, maintain schedules, and track and report progress Lead projects to develop and implement procedures for in-house salt purification Develop specifications for chemicals for both lab-scale and CMSR use, and communicate with suppliers to ensure these specifications are met Develop apparatus for conducting experiments, e.g. sensors to follow the evolution of chemical behaviour Maintain a holistic understanding of the CMSR, its chemistry-related challenges and overall deployment road map Interface with technical specialists to understand relevant performance requirements and design limitations Support development of fission product removal concepts Support development of robust instrumentation and control systems for monitoring and controlling the chemical and physical properties of molten salts in the CMSR Keep informed of global developments in molten salt chemistry and attend workshops and webinars if required REQUIRED COMPETENCIES At least 3 years of experience using electrochemical methods to study chemical behaviour in molten salts is required PhD in molten salt chemistry or related field is strongly preferred Experience handling and purifying molten fluoride salts is strongly preferred, or otherwise experience handling molten chloride salts is required Experience handling anhydrous hydrofluoric acid (or comparably hazardous gases such as HCl or Cl2) is strongly preferred Experience handling radioisotopes is strongly preferred Experience with spectroscopy in molten salts is desired Experience with chemical analysis techniques such as UV-vis, IR or Raman spectroscopy, ICP-OES/MS and powder X-ray diffraction is required Experience with materials characterisation techniques such grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy is desired Experience from the nuclear industry is desired You can help us evaluate your skills by solving a few problems around thermophysical properties of fluoride salts.
